Hemolytic uremic syndrome


·         Is the #1 cause of acute renal failure in children in the US

·         Features of the disease include:

o   Microangiopathic hemolytic anemia

o   Thrombocytopenia

o   Renal failure

·         Most commonly caused by enterohemorrhagic E. coli of the 0157:H7 serotype, but can be caused by shigella or strep pneumoniae

·         Treatment is supportive

o    Platelets should be given only if significant bleeding or if there is need for invasive procedure.

o   In the setting of CNS symptoms, plasma exchange can be considered
