Listeria Monocytogenes


·         Is a gram positive organism

·         Is known to cause both GI illness (which is usually self-limited) as well as sepsis and encephalitis/meningitis

·         Ingestion of tainted food is the method of contraction of the disease

o   Person to person transmission does not occur * unless you count maternal-fetal transmission

·         Common foods are raw fruits and vegetables, unpasteurized dairy products, all types of raw meats and fish and varied products like sausage

o   The most recent outbreak in the US is from cantaloupe and the death toll has reached 21 so far

·         High risk groups are pregnant women and the immunocompromised, but all people can develop infection

·         Treatment of CNS infection is with ampicillin.  For penicillin allergic patients, bactrim is the treatment of choice
