Let’s go over the remaining 6 nerves.

 

CN 7- FACIAL Nerve

·         Supplies motor branches to the muscles of facial expression

·         Ask the patient to

o   raise their eyebrows

o   close their eyes and keep them closed against resistance

o   puff out their cheeks

o   show you their teeth

 

CN 8- VESTIBULOCOCHLEAR Nerve

·         Provides innervation for hearing mechnisms

·         Is officially tested using the Rinne and Weber tests

 

CN 9-GLOSSOPHARYNGEAL Nerve

·         Provides sensory supply to the palate

·         It can be tested with the gag reflex

 

CN 10- VAGUS Nerve

·         Provides motor supply to the palate

·         It can be tested by asking the patient to say “ah” and watching for symmetric elevation and midline location of the uvula

 

CN 11- SPINAL ACCESSORY Nerve

·         Provides motor supply to the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles

·         It can be tested by asking the patient to shrug their shoulders and turn their head against resistance

 

CN 12-HYPOGLOSSAL Nerve

·         Provides motor supply to the tongue muscles

·         It can be tested by asking the patient to stick their tongue out. It should be midline
